Urea is also known as urea or carbamide. It is the final product of protein metabolism in humans and mammals, and is also a major organic nitrogen compound excreted by animals. The pure form is in the form of white granules or needle-like, prism-shaped crystals. When mixed with heavy metals such as iron, it appears pale red or yellow. It has no smell or odor, is easily soluble in water, ethanol and benzene, and is insoluble in ether and chloroform. At 0°C, 100 kilograms of water can dissolve 105 kilograms of urea. During dissolution, it absorbs heat. The aqueous solution is neutral in reaction. The pure form contains 46.65% nitrogen, while agricultural urea is 42% to 46%, with a small amount of diurea, generally less than 2%. It is usually harmless to crop growth. The specific gravity and bulk density of urea are both small, with each cubic meter of fertilizer weighing 0.65 tons.

Application

Urea is mainly used as a fertilizer. In industry, it is also used as a raw material for manufacturing urea-formaldehyde resins, polyurethanes, and melamine-formaldehyde resins. It also has extensive applications in medicine, explosives, tanning, flotation agents, pigments, and petroleum product dewaxing. When heated to 200°C, urea generates solid trichloroacetic acid (i.e., cyanuric acid). The derivatives of trichloroisocyanuric acid such as trichloroisocyanuric acid, sodium dichloroisocyanurate, isocyanuric acid tri(2-hydroxyethyl), isocyanuric acid tri(allyl)ester, tris(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)isocyanurate, isocyanuric acid triisocyanurate complex, etc., have many important applications.
