Glycerol is also known as propylene glycol. Pure glycerol is a colorless, odorless, sweet-tasting viscous liquid. Its boiling point is 290℃, its melting point is 17.9℃, and its relative density is 1.2613. It can be infinitely miscible with water, and anhydrous glycerol has a strong hygroscopic property. Glycerol has a weak acidity and can react with basic hydroxides, such as when reacting with copper hydroxide, it can form a bright blue glycerol copper (which can be used for identifying polyols). Glycerol reacts with nitric acid to form trinitroglycerol esters, also known as nitroglycerin, due to its hygroscopic property, it is often used as a moisture-absorbing agent and moisturizer in cosmetics, leather, tobacco, food, and textiles. Glycerol also has a laxative effect and can be used for enemas or made into suppositories to treat constipation. Nitroglycerin esters have the effect of dilating coronary arteries and can be used to treat angina pectoris. Nitroglycerin can be used as an explosive and propellant. Glycerol reacts with diacids to form alcohol-acid resins, which are widely used in paints and coatings. In nature, glycerol exists in the form of esters. For example, various animal and plant oils are glycerol's carboxylic acid esters, and by hydrolyzing the oils, fatty acids and glycerol can be obtained. Currently, one of the main sources of glycerol is the by-product of the soap industry (oil hydrolysis under alkaline conditions), and another source is the production from propylene in petroleum cracking gas

Application

Glycerin can lubricate and stimulate the intestinal wall, soften the stool and make it easier to be excreted. It also has a dehydrating effect. When combined with sodium ascorbate and formulated into a compound preparation for intravenous administration, it can lower intraocular pressure. Topically, it has an astringent effect and softens the local tissue. It can dissolve substances such as borax, boric acid, phenol, nucleic acids, and salicylic acid. It is mainly used for constipation in children and the elderly and weak, emergency treatment of general cerebral edema, treatment of glaucoma, prevention and treatment of winter skin fissures and peeling, etc.
