Propylene glycol is also known as "1,2-propanediol". Its chemical formula is CH3CHOHCH2OH. The molecular weight is 76.10. There is one chiral carbon atom in the molecule. The racemic form is an easily hygroscopic viscous liquid with a slight pungent smell. The specific gravity is 1.036 (25/4°C), the freezing point is -59°C. The boiling point is 188.2°C and 83.2°C (1,333 Pa). It is miscible with water, acetone, ethyl acetate and chloroform, and soluble in ether. It can be dissolved in many essential oils, but cannot be mixed with petroleum ether, paraffin and oils. It is relatively stable to heat and light, and becomes more stable at low temperatures. The levorotatory form has a boiling point of 187-189°C and a specific rotation [α]D20 of -15.0°. Propylene glycol can be oxidized to acetaldehyde, lactic acid, pyruvic acid and acetic acid at high temperatures.

用途Application

Propylene glycol has good solubility and is widely used as a solvent, extraction solvent and preservative for injectable drugs (such as intramuscular and intravenous injections) and non-injectable drug preparations (such as oral solutions, eye preparations, ear preparations, dental preparations, rectal-vaginal preparations, transdermal preparations, etc.). It is a better solvent than glycerol and can dissolve many substances such as corticosteroids (hormones), chloramphenicol, sulfonamides, barbiturates, reserpine, quinidine, hydrocortisone dehydroxyacetic acid, aescin sulfate, nitrogen mustard hydrochloride, vitamins A and D, many volatile oils, most alkaloids and many local anesthetics. Propylene glycol acts as an antibacterial agent similar to ethanol, and its ability to inhibit mold is similar to that of glycerol, slightly lower than ethanol. Propylene glycol is usually used as a plasticizer in water-based film coating materials on Chemicalbook. When mixed in equal amounts with water, it can delay the hydrolysis of certain drugs and increase the stability of the preparation product. 15% to 30% propylene glycol solutions, semi-solid preparations can be used as antibacterial preservatives, about 15% topical preparations of propylene glycol can be used as moisturizers, 10% to 30% propylene glycol aerosol solvents, 10% to 25% propylene glycol oral solutions, 10% to 60% injectable preparations, 5% to 80% topical preparations should be used as solvents and co-solvents. [Stability and Storage Conditions] It is extremely stable at room temperature, but it is oxidized when exposed to the air at high temperatures (above 280℃); when mixed with 95% ethanol or water, it has chemical stability; it can be sterilized by heat pressure or filtration sterilization. Propylene glycol is hygroscopic and should be stored in a cool and dry place, in a light-proof and sealed container.
